What is a ping or pinging?

I just signed up for Linklicious and when I submitted my url it said that it would ping it once every 12 hours? Can someone please explain what this is?

The only thing I know about pinging is to let google knows that there are new url submitted. So we can ping our articles and videos once they are submitted.
