As of me SEO is Search Engine Optimization in which we optimize our website for search engines. SEM is Search Engine Marketing in which we promote our through many marketing tactics. And SMM is Social Media Marketing which includes promotion of websites through Social Bookmarking, networking websites, forums posting, blog and article posting, and many more.

But I'd like to add that all three are the parts of the term "Inbound marketing" - wide range of activities aimed to promote your product/service/company etc.. on the internet.
Inbound marketing = SEO + SEM + SMM

SMO refers to the process of exposing your website on social media channels. so that it's awareness and content are easily spread through social mediums and online communities by users and visitors of the website. This can include anything done "on-page" such as improving the design and usability of the website.

SMM on the other hand plays more of an active role which makes use of social media outlets to promote a product. Most importantly it helps you in product promotion and interaction with customers.
This can be anything from creating compelling content that gets bookmarked and even hits digg's homepage to spreading a viral video by putting it on YouTube. It's about the things that are done "off-site", For example, participating in online communities where your customers hang out would be an active role that falls under SMM.
