Penguin 3.0 update released by Google in October 2014 was aimed at targeting websites with spammy link profiles. It primarily affected sites that were engaged in black-hat SEO practices and had low-quality backlinks. The update intended to improve the quality of search engine results by penalizing sites with unnatural and manipulative link building strategies.

The Penguin 3.0 update was a significant algorithmic refresh by Google, intended to better identify and penalize websites that violated its guidelines on link schemes and spammy link practices. It was the sixth official update to the Penguin algorithm, which specifically targeted off-page factors like link quality. The update aimed to improve search results by devaluing low-quality and manipulative backlinks, while rewarding websites with natural and high-quality links.

Penguin 3.0 rolled out globally and affected a significant number of websites. It impacted sites with a history of unnatural link building practices, such as buying links, participating in link schemes, or using automated link building software. Websites that relied heavily on these tactics saw drops in their rankings and organic traffic.

The update also had a real-time component, meaning that websites could recover from penalties or be penalized more swiftly based on the changes they made to their link profiles. This allowed webmasters to disavow or remove harmful backlinks and see the impact of those actions sooner.

Overall, the Penguin 3.0 update aimed to further discourage the use of spammy link building techniques, ensuring that search results were more relevant, trustworthy, and of higher quality for users.

Nothing happened to me. Penguin 3.0 only affects the pirate websites... It's not my case!

If you follow Google guidelines on creating backlinks, there is nothing to worry about. Penguin update 3.0 targets spammy sites.

We had amazing results over here, lots of recoveries, our main web site going up also. can't complain about that one !

On big money queries lots of corporations went up again though...i'll have to scratch my head a little more to figure how to defeat them :)

Penguin 3.0 update still give a great deal of Local SEO juice to Yelp directory listings. I am dealing with this problem on a sister city search. This is not a direct result of this update

Yes, it wasn't very big after all, where not affected by this one.  Based on Pierre Far from Google Penguin refresh affected fewer than 1% of queries in US English search results and additionally according to him this refresh helps sites that have already cleaned up the web spam signals discovered in the previous Penguin iteration. And yes it is somewhat a slow worldwide rollout that we can even feel it, although on its first week there are some variations in terms of rankings but after a week, rankings comeback.

Did your site previously hit by Google Penguin update? How did you recover from that situation? Which process did you adapt then?

Google Penguin is a filter in Google's ranking algorithm that targets websites that use spam methods to get backlinks. For example, Google does not like paid backlinks, automatically created backlinks from forums and blogs, do-follow blog comments, low quality links, etc
