Search engines are programs that search dоcuments for specified keywords and return a list of the dоcuments where the keywords were found. While they might seem like a recent invention, they have been around in various forms for decades.

Here are some of the common types of search engines available today:

Crawler-Based Search Engines (Web Search Engines): These are the most common type of search engine. Examples include Google, Bing, and Yahoo. They use automated software agents (called crawlers or spiders) that visit websites and index their content. When you type a keyword into a search engine, it looks through its index for those keywords and serves you the most relevant results.

Meta Search Engines: These search engines take your search query and run it through several other search engines, combining the results. They don't have their own database or crawlers. Instead, they depend on other search engines' data. Examples include Dogpile and MetaCrawler.

Directory Search Engines: Also called web directories, these search engines list websites in categories, which can be explored. Human editors review all submissions to ensure quality control. An example of this is the DMOZ directory, which was decommissioned in 2017.

Hybrid Search Engines: These combine crawler-based results and directory results to provide a more comprehensive set of search results. Yahoo used to be an example of this, although it now uses Bing's technology for its search engine.

Vertical Search Engines: These focus on specific sectors or segments. They may concentrate on a particular type of data (e.g., scientific information), a particular kind of information extraction (e.g., images or prices), or particular styles of search queries (e.g., question-answering). Examples include Indeed for job searches and Trivago for hotel searches.

Semantic Search Engines: These use artificial intelligence (AI) to understand the user's query contextually and offer more precise results. Rather than looking for exact match keywords, they look for the intent behind those words. A known example is the search engine used by Wolfram Alpha.

I can explain more about some lesser-known or specialized types of search engines:

Scholarly Search Engines: These are designed to find academic and scholarly information. They index journals, theses, academic books, trade publications, and other scholarly content. Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic are examples of such search engines. Another example is Pubmed, a free search engine accessing primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics.

Visual Search Engines: These enable users to search and find content through visually similar images or color profiles instead of keywords. Google Images, Pinterest, and Bing Visual Search are known visual search engines. They utilize machine learning and image recognition to produce results.

Privacy-focused Search Engines: These search engines prioritize user privacy, often by not tracking user's search histories or personal data. DuckDuckGo is a prominent example of this category. Other examples include Startpage and Swisscows.

E-commerce Search Engines: These are specific for finding products for sale online. Amazon might be considered an example, as it has a robust search function for finding products within its database. Google Shopping is another example that aggregates products from many different retailers.

Real-time Search Engines: These focus on real-time content, such as social media posts and news updates. Twitter's search function is a form of real-time search, as it lets users search all recent tweets.

Question and Answer Search Engines: These are platforms where the search queries are answered by people. The results generated come from users who offer their answers to the questions posed. Examples include Yahoo Answers (discontinued in 2021), Quora, and StackExchange.

Local Search Engines: These provide information about local businesses in a specific area. They are excellent for finding shops, restaurants, and services within a specific geographic area. Google Maps, Yelp, and Bing Places are examples.

Code Search Engines: These are focused on programmers and developers, enabling them to search for code snippets and solutions. Examples include Google's now-closed code search tool, or GitHub's code search function.

Let's dive into more types of search engines and some specific use cases they're often tailored to:

News Search Engines: These gather and present news articles from across different locations, media outlets, and topics. Google News is one of the most popular examples of this type of engine, striving to personalize the feed based on user's interests.

Multimedia Search Engines: These are designed to find various types of multimedia content including audio (music, speech, etc.), video, images, and more. YouTube, for instance, can be considered a video search engine, as it enables users to search for videos on virtually any topic.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Search Engines: These kinds of search engines scan peer-to-peer networks to search for shared files on personal computers that are connected to the internet. Examples of P2P networks include BitTorrent, eDonkey, and Gnutella.

Bioinformatics Search Engines: In the field of biology and genetics, there are specific search engines for researching genetic sequences and related information. BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) is an example of a bioinformatic search engine widely used in the field.

Job Search Engines: These collate job postings from multiple websites, providing a comprehensive resource for job seekers. Indeed, CareerBuilder, and LinkedIn can all be considered job search engines.

Social Media Search Engines: Within social networks, there are search functions that allow you to find content, users, hashtags, and more. Examples include Facebook Search, Instagram Search, and LinkedIn's search feature.

Forum Search Engines: These search engines are used specifically to find discussion forums on a variety of topics. Boardreader is one such search engine.

Domain-specific Search Engines: These usually apply to large websites or platforms that have their own search functionality. For instance, Reddit's search feature only pulls results from Reddit posts and discussions.

TOR Search Engines: These engines let you search the dark web while maintaining anonymity. Examples include Torch, Ahmia, and Hidden Wiki.

Educational Search Engines: These search engines prioritize educational content for students, teachers, and researchers. Examples include RefSeek and Academic Index.

Environmental Search Engines: Ecosia is an example of a search engine promoting environmental sustainability. It uses its profits to plant trees across the globe.

Hello,

There are two types of search engines:
1.Crawler-based search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) create their listings automatically by using a piece of software to "crawl" or "spider" the web and then index what it finds to build the search base.

2. Human-powered directories ( Business Directories, B2B Portals) depend on human editors to create their listings.

Search engines are programs that search dоcuments for particular keywords and return a list of the dоcuments where the keywords were found. A web search engine is software code that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. Every search engine uses different complex mathematical formulas to generate search results.

Two Types of Search Engine are Available :

Crawler based search engines are those search engines that use the automatic software normally called crawlers, which visit a specific website. They then read the data on the specific site and follow the links, which link to perform indexing on the linked websites .

Human powered search engines are sites that have actual people looking for and answering your queries, rather than typical search engines comprised of automated programs crawling the web to find your solutions.
