Need help to increase traffic to site

I am looking for tips to improve my on site traffic and would appreciate your help. I have tried to build backlinks from several social bookmarking sites and online directories along with forums and backlinks from related sites. Still the amount of traffic coming into the site is not very impressive. I am now beginning to get very desperate. Can someone suggest any good techniques to improve the flow of traffic to my site? This has been a problem since the last few months.
