bsnes is a free SNES emulator written in C++ with official ports for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
Background
Development of bsnes began on October 14, 2004, and the first version was released in May of 2005 for Windows. Since then, official ports have been made for Linux and Mac OS X. The source code of the emulator has always been available, but changed from a custom license to GNU GPLv2 at version 0.052.
bsnes is still being actively developed. It is notable in that it was the first to feature SPC7110 emulation, SPC700 cycle-level emulation, and Super Game Boy emulation.
Reception
British internet magazine WebUser recommended bsnes for "some fun old-school gaming."[1]
Japanese game magazine GameLabo recommended bsnes for "those seeking a realistic playing experience."[2]
