ZSNES is a free SNES emulator written mostly in x86 assembly with official ports for Linux, MS-DOS, and Windows.
History
Development of ZSNES began on July 3, 1997, and the first version was released on October 14, 1997, for MS-DOS. Since then, official ports have been made for Windows and Linux. The emulator became Open Source under the GPL license on April 2, 2001. In March of 2006, the source repository was moved from SourceForge.net to BountySource.[1]
Although the last release was in 2007, and despite the departure of its original developers zsKnight and _Demo_, ZSNES remains under active development.[2] It is notable in that it was among the first to emulate most SNES enhancement chips at some level.
The emulator is written mainly in in low-level assembly language for x86 processors, in order to run more smoothly on slower processors. However, as a result it cannot be ported to devices that do not run on Intel-compatible processors, as such a port would require the majority of the codebase be entirely re-written from scratch. Thus, for example, there is no possibility of ZSNES ever running as homebrew software on the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii, which utilize the PowerPC processor.[3] Fellow emulator project Snes9X is written in the higher language C++ and has been ported to a variety of devices including the Nintendo Wii, DS, Xbox, Sony PlayStation 2, PSP and Sega Dreamcast.
Reception
ZSNES is currently one of the most popular SNES emulators available.[4] Retro Gamer called ZSNES "very impressive."[5]
