Confluence is a web-based corporate wiki written in Java and mainly used in corporate environments. It is developed and marketed by Atlassian Software Systems. Confluence is sold as either on-premises software or as a hosted solution. Its license is proprietary, but a zero-cost license program is available for non-profit organizations and open source projects.[2][3]

Confluence is used by over 7,800 organisations in more than 94 countries. Notable customers include Adobe Systems, Sun Microsystems, IBM, SAP, Bloomberg LP, Johns Hopkins University, United Nations and Weill Cornell Medical College.[4]

History

Confluence 1.0 was released on March 25, 2004. The stated purpose of Confluence 1.0 was "to build an application that was built to the requirements of an enterprise knowledge management system, without losing the essential, powerful simplicity of the wiki in the process." [5] In 2008 Confluence was awarded by ReadWriteWeb as one of the "Top 10 Enterprise Web Products of 2008".[6] In recent versions, Confluence seems to be evolving into part of an integrated collaboration platform. [7]

Confluence has been adapted to work in conjunction with other software products of the same company: with JIRA, FishEye, Clover, Crucible and Bamboo.[8]
